Copper Cove Parks Beautification Committee

The best time to plant a tree was ten years ago. The second best time is now. With that philosophy; John Howsden, Dianna Lopez, Shari Stromer and Anne Plummer formed the Copper Cove Park Beautification Committee (The Tree Committee) to plant fast growing shade trees at Black Creek Park.

Black Creek Park, located at the corner of Copper Cove Drive and Black Creek Drive, covers thirty-three acres. Among other amenities, it has a popular baseball diamond, a newly improved play area, a large barbeque pit, a horseshoe pit and vast open areas available for family activities. What it doesn’t have is an ample supply of large shade trees to provide a respite from the sun while enjoying park activities during our notoriously hot summer months.

The Committee’s goal is to plant and maintain fast growing shade trees in the park at key locations to provide a cool and inviting atmosphere for park guests. In addition, we are looking into installing a lawn beneath the trees near the swings for the comfort of those who want to be near their children playing in the sand lot.

Because of the size of the park and the need to do it right, we divided the project into phases. The first phrase was to acquire a master plan, showing where and what trees to be planted along with an irrigation system.

Since trees, especially new trees need water; we opted to install the irrigation system before planting any trees. The committee consulted several local landscapers and is now submitting a proposal to the Board for their review. Once the irrigation system is in place, we’ll start the planting trees.

With the exception of installing the irrigation system, most of this work can be done with volunteers, which we welcome to the committee. Planting trees together not only is a great way to meet your neighbors, but also a fun and healthy way to improve your community park.
